DAY 1                UNDERBERG – OXBOW                       

We depart from Underberg at 8am and tackle the 4×4 drive up the legendary Sani Pass

Here you will learn all about the history, geology, flora & fauna as we wind your way up the Sani Pass and through the Ukahlamba Drakensberg World Heritage Site and into the Kingdom of Lesotho.

After a drinks break at the “Highest Pub in Africa” we make our way up Black Mountain Pass (3240m) and down the beautiful Sehonghong river valley and on to the private and remote village of Makhupung. Here we visit the resident traditional healer, observe a unique song & dance routine and a secret ceremonial dance. Interact with the villagers as they go through their daily lives. A true, once in a lifetime, cultural experience.

After passing the remote town of Mokhotlong and seeing the national plant ‘the Spiral Aloe’ we then climb to the “Roof of Africa” past the Letsing Diamond Mine (world’s highest diamond mine), In January 2018 the world’s fifth largest diamond, a 910 carat gem, of exceptional quality was found at this mine.

The ‘Roof Of Africa’ offers exceptional views and photo opportunities as we summit the highest pass in Lesotho (Tlaeeng Pass, 3279m)(Africa’s highest motorable pass) and then on to Oxbow Lodge. Overnight

DAY 2       OXBOW  – THABA BASUI                    

This morning we leave the Maluti Mountains as we drive down the winding and lush, scenic Moteng Pass and into the Lesotho lowlands. We visit the Liphofung Caves which have been used by people since prehistoric times as evidenced by San rock art on the walls. Learn all about this special site.

After a visit to the Leribe Craft Centre to watch mohair being spun and then we make our way to the Ha Kome Cave Dwellings, built in the 19th century and still lived in by the original families.  The caves have been carefully restored and are in the process of being declared a National Heritage site.

Next stop is Thaba Bosiu where the Basotho nation was built. Moshoeshoe and his people took occupation here and were never conquered by invaders. Visit the cultural village. Overnight near Thaba Bosiu.


From Thaba Bosiu we will take a leisurely drive through to Roma for a brief look at the second largest dinosaur’s footprints in the world. Lesotho boasts some of the most pristine dinosaur relics  and is a Mecca for archaeologists and palaeontologists.  The dinosaur footprints are believed to be between 208 and 200 million years old.

We then climb back into the Lesotho Highlands and on to the town of Semongkong. Here you will have time to explore the daily life of  a very different bustling, remote trading village. This is also home to the world famous Malentsunyana Falls.

A Town Tour & Blanket Presentation are highlights. Time permitting a donkey pub crawl is optional but not guaranteed. Overnight at Semongkong lodge.


From the sights and sounds of donkeys and horses we take a dirt track to the spectacular Maletsunyane Falls (187 m), also known as the ‘Place of Smoke’ and is one of the highest single-drop waterfalls in Southern Africa. This is also home to the highest Abseil in the world (196 m).

Before leaving the Kingdom of Lesotho we take one more scenic drive through the Lesotho Highlands to Qacha’s Nek border post. We pass through Matatiele before making our way back along the front of the Southern Drakensberg Mountains to Underberg.
