Lesotho Highlands

Sani Pass is the mountain gateway to the Kingdom of Lesotho, and boasts breathtaking views while winding your way up this hair-raising road, which climbs nearly 1000m in 8km. The reward is a drink at the highest pub in Africa.

Lesotho is an extraordinary country that provides spectacular mountain scenery, and a chance to experience the simplicity of a mountain people. This is an opportunity to explore nature still little changed by man, and unspoilt by crowds of tourists.

Day 1 : Lunch and dinner

Today you will experience all that a standard Sani Pass tour offers, plus the trip to Makhapung, a small Basotho village deep in the highlands of Lesotho. Depart from Underberg and drive up the Sani Pass and into Kingdom of Lesotho. Refreshments at the “highest pub in Africa.”From Sani Top we cross the Sani Plateau before climbing the Black Mountain Pass (3240m). From here you can see Thabana Ntlenyana (the highest point in Southern Africa). We then head down the Sehonghong Valley past Highland Basotho villages and on to Makhapung.

At Makhapung you will visit the resident traditional healer, observe a unique song & dance routine and a secret ceremonial dance. Interact and lunch with the villagers. A true, once in a lifetime, cultural experience.

Our overnight stay is at Molumong ”Place of the Thunder”, situated at an old trading post. It is a comfortable, but basic colonial homestead, which is built from natural stone and is surrounded by majestic views.

Spend the rest of the late afternoon exploring Molumong village, hiking or just relax and absorb the peace and tranquility in this vast, isolated mountain kingdom.

Day 2 : Breakfast and lunch

After breakfast and a visit the St James’s Misssion, we take a trip to Mokhotlong ”Place of the Bald Ibis”. It’s role as a police post first brought people to this part of Lesotho in 1905. It developed into a trading centre for the people of the Highlands region.

We then double back on the route from the day before, have lunch at the Sani Mountain Lodge, before the descent down the Sani Pass and back to Underberg.
